Film Wedding Photography

Just a heads up, I can talk about film photography at weddings for hours (ask my wife—she’s heard it all, eye rolls included). My obsession started thanks to a friend who found an old film camera in his loft and thought I’d have fun with it. He wasn’t wrong. The first roll I developed had been sitting in that camera for 20 years—and the photos were still beautiful. That’s when I learned my first lesson: film is built to last.

I truly fell in love with film when I became a dad. Shooting my son, Micah, on film let me slow down and be fully present. It felt meaningful and the photos were stunning. Since then, every family memory we’ve captured has been on film and I’ve never looked back!

Film photography is intentional. When you click the shutter, you have created an image on a tangible roll of film through chemicals and light. Therefore, each photo says ‘This moment is so precious that I am going to keep it forever’. And isn’t that what a wedding day is made up of? Moments so precious that they deserve to be kept for generations to come.

Film photography is magical. There is something indefinably beautiful about it with its’ wildness and its’ nuances. In an age where photos are perfectly polished and factory filtered, there is a craving in me and in many couples getting married for something raw and organic. Film photos are soft, they are warm, they have natural grain and they are utterly timeless.

Film photography is art. There are so many different looks that you can create within film photography. It depends on your camera, your lens, the type of film and how the photos are developed and scanned. Having been popular since the 1880s, that’s a lot of years for people to get creative with how to take photos on film and that is what gets me absolutely buzzing each time I pick up my cameras. And there are plenty more cameras on my wish list, each with a view to creating something unique.

Film photography is finite. Every roll has a limit, and there’s only so much room in the fridge (yes, it lives in the fridge!) which has sparked more than one debate at home. But that’s what makes it special. Each photo is deliberate, thought through and precious and all the more beautiful for that. Once captured and stored, the moment is unrepeatable and you simply have to trust yourself and wait for the day the scans come back. That day is always a good day.

Trust me when I say, your wedding is worth capturing on film. Get in touch with me to discuss what options I can offer you.
